It would never happen but I wonder what would happen if universities collectively just shut down their athletic programs.

I think its going to be hard for the OVC schools to compete in basketball outside the conference.

All schools will suffer but I think many power 5 schools the most. There will be bidding wars that will break the bank, and unkept promises that will prompt law suits, and more corruption than any of us could imagine.

If the OVC can stay out of the bidding war that may make the high major conferences go bankrupt then may be the OVC SWAC, MEAC etc will be standing tall in the end. The way I understand it is that all the D1 schools get a share of the NCAA D1 tournament.

There will be bidding wars for sure among the mids....but not a fraction of the level from the majors. Most mids will not feel as compelled simply because they know they have limits. The lesser paying power schools i can forsee getting scqezed out. Just thinking out loud and wondering what has happened to the game I have loved since a child

The good thing is that USI does not have a football program so our resources will not have to drain in a football program.

Greed has certainly taken over now. However, all of this stems from the ineptness of the NCAA.

Presently, the NCAA really doesn't exist...and they know it...it just hasn't been announced yet...but stay tuned.

But ONE NCAA rule still exists and is basically the only rule they will not budge on.
4 year Ban From NCAA Tournaments.
Think about all the changes in the NCAA in the past 2-3 years that we thought would never happen.
But no way they can reduce the 4 year ban to a manageable 2 year ban?!?!?!

The way I understand it is that all the D1 schools get a share of the NCAA D1 tournament. I think there is a lot of truth in what you are stating. There are many power schools who cannot complete financially with the very elite...and those schools will either be drowned by the debt they cannot afford or just find themselves sitting at the bottom of their respective league year after year...this is especially true in football. The way I kind of see it, leagues like the OVC will never get the very elite players....only the top schools who will be knocking each other down paying exorbitant monies. There are a lot of great players world wide who will not command nearly as much as others. The key, of course, is identifying those players who you have a shot at. Now that said, even at our level, you are going to have a better chance to win with a strong NIL...but teams in most middies I think would should more restraint. The margin of talent level I think would be not as great among most OVC schools and similar institutions. Maybe I am wrong, but just a my perspective.
