If the OVC can stay out of the bidding war that may make the high major conferences go bankrupt then may be the OVC SWAC, MEAC etc will be standing tall in the end. The way I understand it is that all the D1 schools get a share of the NCAA D1 tournament. I think there is a lot of truth in what you are stating. There are many power schools who cannot complete financially with the very elite...and those schools will either be drowned by the debt they cannot afford or just find themselves sitting at the bottom of their respective league year after year...this is especially true in football. The way I kind of see it, leagues like the OVC will never get the very elite players....only the top schools who will be knocking each other down paying exorbitant monies. There are a lot of great players world wide who will not command nearly as much as others. The key, of course, is identifying those players who you have a shot at. Now that said, even at our level, you are going to have a better chance to win with a strong NIL...but teams in most middies I think would should more restraint. The margin of talent level I think would be not as great among most OVC schools and similar institutions. Maybe I am wrong, but just a my perspective. The problem comes in when the power schools kick the NCAA out of their house. It will happen in football soon, basketball will be next. Without that revenue the big dogs make to give some crumbs to the little guy, we will see a massive tsunami in sports. Doesn’t mean that will be a bad thing in the end, just a lot of unknowns. The strong will survive and as a few of us have mentioned on this board, not having football will be a saving grace of us.

I think you nailed it, shorthaircut. The "unknowns" once the split occur will show us where we (the little guy) land. Never been so grateful that USI does not do football. For me, I do wonder once the split occurs will there still be competition on the field between the "bigs" and the "littles". Maybe to say it a different way, I hope, as eagle87 has stated, will schools like ourselves become the new "Division 2". I think that is where it is headed though. I want to still have the opportunities to play the "elite". Like you said, lots of unknowns....

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see them going off and forming their own thing because it doesn't hold the same alure of its no longer NCAA accredited.
If I started my own league called the Sandtiger 5v5 basketball league. and I beat my neighbors and then a team of middle schoolers from New Harmonie I don't get to say we're the national champions. It's the diversity and number of schools you're beating and the number of schools the other teams beat. It's why I cringe when they say someone had their top game against East-West or on the women's team their "best performance came against Brescia".
College football can go off and do it's own thing because there is too much behind the scenes BS there already where the NCAA doesn't even have a say in the national championship, along with the 2 division the Bowl Subdivision, and the Championship Subdivision.

As I have mentioned before, this is all just a big mess. But here is my take on this. If the NCAA would somehow dissolve, it would totally destroy college athletics and it would negatively change the landscape forever and ruin the college game forever. I don’t think it will come to this…I hope anyway. What I think is more likely to happen if the big boys decide they want to separate is we will see every other sport follow what football has done…and there will be D1A for the big boys, and the rest will be D1AA. The big boys will get their own tournament and so will we. We will still get the opportunity to play the big boys…just like now in football…but come tournament's time we go our own way. I’m not really a fan of this because it essentially makes every Mid a Division 2 team once again because we will be the Second level of talent. But, the D1AA teams won’t be forced to pay players ridiculous salaries and that’s how we Mids without 500million dollars TV contracts will be able to survive. The D1A big boys will Pay their players big money and it will essentially turn college sports into minor leagues. I have no proof this will all happen but just my gut feeling.

I know we all say how we dislike our home uniforms.. I'm watching Charleston @ Townson, Townson's are this god awful robin egg blue with gold trim and some half trim on the back of the neck. Charleston's are black with white trim and just say 'College' in cursive on them.

I meant minor league in the context that they are being paid and contracted. You are correct though that their salary will far exceed what minor league players make. Not minor leagues….right now some are making more than they will in the pros. And it’s going to get even bigger! Lebron’s kid is making millions of dollars and he is just terrible.

The "NCAA" will not dissolve. Nor will the high majors leave the "NCAA" to form a new association. If the high majors leave the "NCAA" then the assets of the NCAA will go to the mid majors and the D2 and D3 schools. The "NCAA" is a brand name nothing more. The real power that controls college athletics is the Big Ten Conference, Southeastern Conference, ESPN and other sports tv stadiums. As for creating a separate tournaments for the high majors and the mid majors its is all ready happing. In volleyball you have the D1 tournament and 32 team National Invitational Volleyball Championship. In women's basketball you have the D1 tournament which will ne mostly high major schools with a few mid majors and the newly formed "NCAA" controlled 32 team WBIT in which it will mostly be made up 5th to 8th place high power conference teams. In men's basketball you have the D1 tournament which will be made up of mostly high major schools with a few mid major schools and the "NCAA" controlled NIT which will mostly be 5th place to 8th place teams in high major conferences and then the CBI that will be made up of mostly mid major schools. In swimming you have the D1 championship and the CSCAA National Invitational Championship. In women's gymnastics you have the D1 championship and the USA gymnastics National championship. And in softball you have the D1 tournament and the National Invitational Softball Championship. I could not find any postseason tournament in the other sports. If the "NCAA" gets rid of the automatic bids for conferences then that will be the final proof the "NCAA" is creating two tournaments one for the high majors and one for the mid majors.

Agree with you but I think the P5/6 might try to push for the D1A and D1AA division just as is already in place in football. I hope they don’t,but that might be the divisional line needed for mids to not have to pay a 2nd sting basketball player 50k…which we can’t even afford. If they separate it will ruin the NCAA imo because I don’t really want to only watch P5/6 teams. The first 2 rounds with upsets is what everyone wants to see. No one gives a rats fat butt about watching Rutgers at 18-13 play USC at 17-14. BORING.

I had a crazy idea for the way the NCAA could pull all the power out of out of the hands of the power 6 conferences. Change the tournament to to be 128 teams top three from each conference gets an automatic bid you cannot be paired in the first two games with a team you've played against in the last two years. This keeps them from just scheduling all the mid Majors against each other and forcing it to be the same thing that it is right now. Allow all the teams to spread out to other conferences it helps with the geographical breakdown where you don't have West Coast teams in the Big Ten and other geographical anomalies like Conference USA where you have teams on the almost East Coast playing against teams in New Mexico. It also takes the power out of their hands because they're no longer all the money makers. I know it'll never happen but it's cool to dream.

I still say expand NCAA to 96, minimum of 18 win’s to qualify unless you win conference championship with a worse record. Give the top 32 teams first round bye. Everyone is happy because more mids get an opportunity to be in it. Also P5/6 are happy because they are the ones getting first round byes. The 18 minimum would probably force P5/6 to play more mids during regular season too because they are going to need to get to the 18 minimum win total so they qualify. More P5/6 and more mids get in so it’s a win-win for both levels.

Agreed, the one reason I followed the D1 tournament was because of the George Mason's, the Virginia Commonwealth's, the Butler's. the Saint Peter's etc making a deep run in the D1 tournament. And if there is a 17-14 USC play a 18-13 Rutgers in the first round I also say BORING. That game should be in the NIT. Remember that the Thunder on the OHIO got boring because Miss Budweiser won every year.

Good point. If the same 64 teams are in every year it will lose interest very rapidly…unless of course it’s your team in the 64. For everyone else, it will be a Snorefest. At that point when viewers are 1/4 what they are now, then they will want to redo the system again but it will be too late. I say just expand it to 96 and put a few stipulations like minimum wins and leave everything else alone. If it ain’t broke don’t fixit.

Then if it becomes a snore fest and if the viewers go away then the real organization that controls college athletics, ESPN and other sports networks, will lose money and then the money will not becoming in for the high majors. And when that happens the high majors will be closed to financial collapse. Can you image having UCLA and USC sending their soccer teams and sports other than football all the way to Rutgers? Also Greed will destroy the high major conferences. The Big Ten and the SEC thought their masters ESPN and other sports networks are in the works to destroy the ACC and Big 12 conferences. ESPN has all ready destroyed the Pacific 12 conference. When the financial collapse happens there is going to be a huge mess to clean up. That is why I say the NIL business model for USI is that to compete with the OVC and the NIL business model for the OVC is to not to try to compete with the Sun Belts, Missouri Valleys, the Atlantic 10, the Big West etc and try to compete with the Southland, Northeast, America East, Patriot, MEAC, SWAC, etc. I believe that schools being conservative on the NIL will win in the end.

I love all the ideas being tossed about concerning the eventual split. But, we have to remember, this is football driven, and that is what is forcing the realignment of college conferences. The NCAA does not run college football any more. And now that players are being paid, and the major conferences control all the money, and since the NCAA is too weak to regulate anything, the power conference have no need AT ALL for the NCAA. They will simply form their own new form of governance. Now we know the NCAA tournament makes a lot of money...and where it ends up I am not sure. The little guys like us survive because of the scraps the power 5 gives us for this tournament. Certainly this tournament completely loses its charm by throwing us middies aside...and that charm I think sells a lot tickets. But will the power conferences think the same thing? That is what I wonder the most
