gousieagles.com/sports/mens-soccer/schedule/20222022 Schedule and Roster are out. Schedule includes 3 Exhibition Games and 14 Regular Season Games. 3 exhibition home games 5 regular season home games They had 16 regular season games last year so only a reduction of 2 games. Maybe they will still add a game or two.

Its is nice for Wisconsin-Green Bay and Chicago State to play at USI. I encourage students to come out and watch USI play. I had a blast when I was a student and USI was D1 in men's soccer.

Men drop their first D1 game this year at Belmont. Not surprised because I think Belmont has a recent tradition rich soccer program. The shots were fairly even, so IMO it was a competitive game. I think the men will struggle this year more than the women in soccer. The women have some D1 level players already. The men will get better each year as they recruit more D1 level, but the first few years might be rough.

I am surprised the score was this close.

Not sure if anyone on here remembers, but I went to several USI D1 soccer matches when they made the jump - only for mens soccer - several years ago. They had success early and were very competitive, even getting some regional rankings if I remember correctly. The difference from back then was the coach. He was a hell of a coach and recruited kids from Europe and other soccer-first countries. USI was really good under his leadership. Since he left the program - to go to Louisville I believe - USI mens soccer was never again at that level he took them to. Not saying the current coach isn’t capable of that, but I do think the mens soccer team has a bigger hill to climb to be among the top tier in the conference. With USI just turning D1 July 1, he didn’t get as much time to recruit D1 level players as some of the winter or spring sports teams, so I hope after this year he can get a few really strong players into the program and elevate to a higher level of play.

And that starts with the AD….

Like I was saying….Basketball is the only chance of being competitive. A complete overhaul is needed if the athletic programs want to be competitive. And that starts with the AD…. Not sure if I agree that ONLY basketball will be competitive this year. I don’t see any reason Cross Country can’t compete with the teams we will meet this year. Baseball will all depend on the HUGE NUMBER of new recruits we have coming in. On paper, the baseball recruits look really really strong - much stronger than we have had the past few years. I think mens soccer was the one team sport on the mens side that I thought would struggle the most, and it appears they are. My hope is that when we get into conference play that we can pull off a few upsets. I was looking at Bellermines first year for team sports, and other than mens basketball, they didn’t have much success year one either. It’s a big jump and without a complete overhaul of coaches and players, its going to be tough to win a lot. I just hope we can adjust in years 2,3 and 4 and be a top half of the conference contender most years. We shall see if they adjust and start to win.

Attending my very first live soccer match at SIUE. It’s like men vs boys, holy cow. I try to be positive most of the time but it’s hard to defend the mens coaches for the past several year of mediocrity. This may be the one team that needs a new leader to guide us in D1. I have nothing against him as a person and he seems like a nice enough man but if we want to win I think we might need some new blood in mens soccer. Losing is to be expected in the transition however we seem to get blown out as opposed to some of the other teams at usi that play close games but lose. Be interesting to see if he wants to try to change or if usi will want to look for a new soccer coach.

Since 2005 131 wins and 157 losses.
8 seasons over .500%, 10 seasons under .500%
Best 2 seasons over that span. 2018 13-4-1 and. 2016. 13-4-4
Worst season over that span. 2006. 2-12-1. And. 2005. 5 -12
This season 0-4 and most not close
To me this is very disappointing considering how big Evansville area is in high school soccer, and Indy is really strong in soccer too. Why are we not getting that talent? Or recruiting from an area that has some better talent? I don’t see the men winning many if any games the rest of the year unless something drastic happens. It’s no wonder why UE wants to always play USI in mens Soccer but not so much in other sports.

Our current head coach is barely above .500 after 13 years at USI. 2018 was a great year when we were the 2nd seed in the Midwest Region and finished ranked 15th Nationally that season. I thought and hoped the program had turned the corner but it has been a steady decline since that year.
With our facilities and soccer history there is no reason we should not have been a power in Division 2.
I know most of this roster was recruited for Division 2 so I don't expect many, if any, wins this year. I do hope I am wrong.
When a 13 year history of about .500 has been established jumping to Division 1 will not magically change things once we start recruiting Division 1 caliber players. Again, I hope I am wrong because I really want the USI soccer team to be successful and think they could have some great crowds if they turn things around very soon. It may take a change of leadership to accomplish this.
