Well that convinces me more that this coach is not what USI needs, he should have been on him and watched him way before now. Especially since he's in Evansville...lost for words...he is not just recent a fly by night player... shameful he said he had not seen him.
Get this into thinking...we are playing with two D3 point guards now. This kid already is better then both.

My understanding is USI is still looking at him. However, what I have heard from a local scout is he needs to expand his shooting range...his ability to do that will determine if he can play at the D1 level.

I think Stan is concerned about his height..6 foot, and his quickness, and his ability to play against taller and faster players. Dunham is maybe 2 inches taller than Campion and not as fast. He is a better shooter and better scorer, but can he replicate that against D1 6-5 point guards? That’s why he only has one D1 offer at the moment. I personally would like him because imo a team can always use a scoring threat, but apparently the majority of D1 coaches have doubts about him. The other college in town doesn’t appear interested either btw.

Would seem like a good redshirt candidate then. If the transition is the reason we aren’t going to be competitive, then seems like the next best strategy is to recruit a bunch of high school kids and redshirt them. Personally I feel we are wasting time with many of our offers. Several of these JUCO offers are kids in the top 20 or so in JUCO. They aren’t going to come here if the “transition” is why we aren’t any good.

I understand your concern about recruiting kids that are probably out of our range but you never know unless you offer. As far as I know it doesn’t cost us anything to make an offer. Some of the offers we have to high school kids were made before bigger schools started recruiting them. The top JUCO kids might be out of our reach but sometimes they have grade issues or something else that scares off the bigger schools that don’t have to accept kids like that. I’m ok with offering anyone that we possibly can get and I think most of them offered so far for into that category. The latest top 15-20 kid might be out of our chances but I would rather aim high than not aim at all. My hope is that with only 2 years transition left, the recruits will start giving us a closer look.

My point I’m trying to make is we need a real cohesive recruiting strategy. If you go back and chronicle the players who don’t do well under Stan you will find a theme. Anyone transferring from another program is vulnerable here.

Oh I agree. But I think that’s part of the reason we were able to get someone like Tilmon. He has talent, but other issues. If he didn’t have those issues he probably would have gotten a better offer from a bigger school. It all is tied to transition imo. We have to take kids that are left unfortunately as opposed to kids that are good students and basketball player and without baggage. I really think most of that will go away once we can be on an even playing field with other mids after the 4 years. U til then it’s either take inferior talent without baggage, or take a more talented player with baggage. Both choices have their downside…so which one do we choose? No clear cut answer.

Good examples of what I am trying to say are guys like Mielke and Campion and Hall. All 3 are great kids. Good grades, follow rules, don’t get into trouble, bust their butts …but they all are a step down in overall talent for D1.

If the goal is really students first, athletes second, then we need to start recruiting players like Bellarmine.

You can’t win with what he says is his strategy. At D2 you got kids on their last chance, so maybe his militant style he was able to get away with. But kids today have too many options. Our style of play isn’t good, our record sucks and now we have a track record of most kids getting kicked off in a 5 year period. Right now we are a freaking mess!

Scotty likes kids like that because he has a system where no one is a star and all the guys are similar talent…can we say Bobby Knight teams from the 70s. He can use them as one cohesive unit and out coach his opponents. I don’t think our staff has the ability to get that done.

I don’t disagree at all, but we can’t win with the current strategy of constant drama either. Something has to give or we are going to dig a hole that will be hard to climb out of.
