In this day and age this is going to be important to keep conferences eligible and competitive and ensure NCAA bids. USI is in the southern division with 5 others. The northern division has 5 teams. It also helps fill out the schedule with regional matchups instead of driving 12 hours for a tennis match. Smart thinking by the OVC commissioner.

Looks like we got a team from the MVC and an independent also. Attachments:

With this addition we are now part of the Summit League for mens soccer and swimming and diving and womens swimming and diving. And now part of the horizon league for mens and womens tennis. The positive I see in this is that if some day USI wants to leave the OVC for whatever reason, we are part of 2 other conferences which would be good fit for the overall athletics program if we needed to change. Also, we are getting the USI name out to lots more markets and media outlets when we play these teams from all 3 conferences. Not sure how much that really helps, but it may help draw attention to USI even for non athletes who might want to attend USI only as a student.

I think USI will stay in the OVC for a long time. Travel in the Summit League would be a nightmare and USI would have to triple their athletic budget to $18 million if USI joined the Horizon League. The OVC is the only D1 conference I wanted USI to join. If USI could not join the OVC then I would have wanted USI to stay D2.

My only concern is if for some reason the OVC folds or merges with another conference and USI is forced to do something different, then USI would maybe have relationship built with the Summit league and Horizon league. I personally think the OVC will be fine and I see maybe adding 2 more schools that are a geographic fit with similar profiles as the OVC teams with similar athletic budgets.

I think the OVC should be aggressive and getting more schools in the conference. The OVC should be looking at Northern Kentucky, Bellarmine, Western Illinois and since the football ASun is not working out the OVC should be looking at getting Austin Peay back and look at getting Central Arkansas.

It looks like the OVC officially does NOT sponsor mens or womens tennis anymore since the new merger with the Horizon league. The winner is officially considered the Horizon League champion. I assume the auto bid for winning the conference would be called the Horizon League representing school. IF anyone knows more or this is incorrect please let us know. Attachments:

I will be the first to admit I don’t know a lot about tennis or who the better teams in college are. But I know 1 thing for sure, USI is not very good - mens and womens teams. I can’t imagine it’s that hard to find a few really good tennis players, but we seem to not recruit any at all. I would love to think we at least start recruiting better now that we are D1. There has to be better talent out there that we could get but for whatever reason don’t seem to get. I hope this changes soon. As of this writing, the tennis teams and volleyball and mens soccer are the programs falling behind. Let’s turn these around soon.

When John Mark Hall was the men's tennis coach USI made the D2 tournament several times. With UE dropping their tennis programs and USI going D1 I hope USI will be competitive in the Ohio Valley and Horizon League conferences.

I am all for moving him back to Tennis coach and getting a new athletic director, assuming a real search is had and not some political appointee, which seems to be the case any more in these state run facilities.

Upgrades to the tennis courts. Small changes, but big improvement.
