Queen’s University just lost their two best players to the portal. Not shocking since they are a transition team too. Anyone in transition that has high level talent…like Swope…is going to have a hard time keeping them. We are just going to have to accept the struggle for 2 more years in men’s basketball. The ladies seem to not hop teams in general so I believe that’s why our women’s teams in general are doing better early on. The men’s basketball players all have grand dreams of playing pro ball and being a star in the NCAA tournament, I just don’t get that from most of the female athletes.

Women are a lot smarter than men, unfortunately. They have a longer term outlook. This idea of picking a team for a full year of basketball for less than a 10% chance of playing a single game in the NCAA tournament is simply ridiculous. I understand if you are good enough to get NIL cheese to move as often as possible. But someone say picking a dump like Eastern Illinois for a REMOTE chance of getting embarrassed in the NCAA tournament? I mean it’s hard for me to process that level of stupidity.

I talked to Spru about this the other night. We both agreed going to a team that has a 1 in a million chance of getting to the tournament is just not that great of an idea. Things like playing in front of a good crowd…USI leads the OVC in home attendance this year btw, great arena, like the SEA and getting a really high chance of big minutes if you have decent talent should be more important. We now know that you don’t even have to have a winning record to get into the 3rd level post season tournament also, so there is a chance to play post season. And we have sent our share of players to Europe to play pro ball. So, he and I agreed these are big selling points for USI. But the boneheads that don’t even give us a chance because of transition are probably not the brightest bulbs in the box anyway.

That's the thing, I've no problem with them using NIL for what it's intended for Name, Image, Likeness, EA puts you in their game sure you should get money, you have a store to sell stuff with your NAME on it like Sophia did then that's precisely what it's for. The issue is when boosters get involved in recruiting. Years ago Pearl got in trouble for a burger, now players are getting money and cars to go to a school. When I was at USI years ago I still remember Wayne Boltinghouse say the NCAA won't even allow us (the school) to give a perspective prospect or current player a t-shirt. He was not kidding...it was really true.

One thing I haven't heard much about the NIL is that, IMO, some of these kids are going to get lazy once somebody gives them all this loot. They WILL NOT have the same incentive to succeed. We already see that is many professional players. Many kids, as we all know, are sometimes lazy...and when you start giving certain recruits a boat load of NIL they will become more interested in their new toys, and walking around with a swagger in front of their teammates with a "me first" attitude. When it comes time for practice some will be the least motivated player on the court.

But they should be set for life.

Former USI player Elija Jones hitting the portal…again. Trying to stay away from head cases like this is critical. I would take a lesser talented player than someone like this, who really isn’t very good.
