Okay hear me out, MTE with USI, NKU, Bellarmine, PFW, and Edwardsville, Structure it like the Bill Joergens Memorial Classic where the teams that are conference foes don't play each other. Call it 'The former GLVC Greats* Classic'
*must have been a GLVC member for more than a decade to join.
Also it would never happen but next year (95-96) we schedule UC-Riverside and play them at Freedom Hall in Louisville.

I was thinking of a 4 team classic of Purdue-Fort Wayne, Northern Kentucky, Bellarmine and Southern Indiana.

Would be interesting but probably unlikely.

Internet Email from the Murray State AD:
NOW MORE THAN EVER, IT IS TIME FOR US TO RALLY BEHIND OUR MEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM AND INVEST IN THE CRITICAL RESOURCES, ESPECIALLY NIL, THAT IT WILL TAKE FOR US TO FIND THE SUCCESS THAT WE HAVE ALL COME TO EXPECT AT MURRAY STATE.

Internet Email from the Murray State AD: NOW MORE THAN EVER, IT IS TIME FOR US TO RALLY BEHIND OUR MEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM AND INVEST IN THE CRITICAL RESOURCES, ESPECIALLY NIL, THAT IT WILL TAKE FOR US TO FIND THE SUCCESS THAT WE HAVE ALL COME TO EXPECT AT MURRAY STATE. I just listened to Nick Saben give his opinion on NIL and the state of college athletics. He said the first thing recruits now days ask is how much they are going to make. He said it’s not what he believes is good for college athletics…and I agree. He went on to say the days of developing players has given way to players just caring about the money. It’s ruining college athletics and greed once again has interfered with what was a great thing. I don’t care for the NBA or even the NFL because greed supersedes playing for your team and their fans. Someone needs to step up and stop or at least slow this train down before it’s too late. I hear people say all the time get on it or get left behind. Well, I’m not really into doing something I feel is wrong just because everyone else is doing it. Sometimes you have to take a stand and speak up to get chaos under control. I applaud Saben for having the guts to step up and say this needs to get under control before we bankrupt universities and teach young people to earn things in life instead of handing out big checks for playing amateur sports. I’m sure my opinion is not going to be popular but this can’t continue or it’s going to destroy the game I love and I don’t want to see that happen.

Devil’s advocate here regarding Saban is that change to NIL reduced his recruiting advantage. But with that being said I don’t disagree with him. What’s going to happen and it probably already is, will be teams will start developing turmoil as some players are paid much greater than others. These NIL deals have no real strings attached or any real performance measurements. Giving tons of money to high school kids is a risk in that not all kids end up developing to the level of expectations. Without a salary cap type system, it is ripe for misuse in many ways.

Agree. If they are going to get money then it needs to be equally distributed to each member of the team imo. If not, as you mentioned, it’s going to cause animosity and disrupt team dynamics and will be a nightmare to try to coach. Just as in life in general, money can bring out the worst sometimes. If handled correctly it could be a good thing.

My thoughts on NIL - I have no issue with kids getting money from gear with their name/number on it, or being paid for being in video games. I think what EA sports is doing for the new NCAA Football is what I envisioned - pay the kid 60 bucks and give them a copy of the game so that their name/likeness can be included in the game. Not sure I'd support them selling 8x10 autographs, but to each their own.
I've gotten the exact same email that Murray sent out from Auburn Athletics, and I don't donate to that. If I want to support a student, I'll buy a shirt from them (like Johni Broome for example). I do not like these NIL collectives, I don't know where the money I donate is going, I don't know what the student is doing to earn the money. And what do I get for donating? At least when I donate to the Tiger Unlimited Fund, the money is used for scholarships, and I get somewhat of a tax writeoff.

But that might cause more problems, too. Does the starter get more money than the redshirt freshmen who didn't play? Do we incentivize post season conference awards?

That's the thing, I've no problem with them using NIL for what it's intended for Name, Image, Likeness, EA puts you in their game sure you should get money, you have a store to sell stuff with your NAME on it like Sophia did then that's precisely what it's for.
The issue is when boosters get involved in recruiting. Years ago Pearl got in trouble for a burger, now players are getting money and cars to go to a school.

The cat as they say is out of the bag now. With the courts in various states getting involved, the NCAA is completely neutered. Now trying to backtrack and create a “system” likely will be met with fierce resistance and tied up on court for a long time.

Was on the road yesterday and had the opportunity to listen to a lot more sports talk radio than normal including multiple shows in multiple markets. All of them addressed the "NIL" in college sports and where it is headed. You asked about incentivizing post season play. Two different shows think the conference tournament sponsors will start paying champions of Conference BasketBall tournaments as early as next year. They think Football bowl champions will be paid as a way to incentive players to play in them and not sit out. There will be an 8 team tournament in Vegas next season where the champion gets $1 million for the players. This tournament is already established so the next step would be to pay conference tournament champions. Crazy world in the "NCAA" right now. Never in my wildest dream did I think I would see any of this. Reminder: the 4 year ban is still in place and apparently is the only remaining rule etched in stone.

Yes, the only rule the NCAA still has control of is the one that needs to be dissolved…the 4 year jail sentence while transitioning.

If the 4-year jail was like 1-2 years, I would understand it, just feels nowadays it’s too long. Especially since we are in modern athletics right now and not 30-40 years ago (Which the ban actually makes sense).

If I remembered right when SIUE went D1 back in 2008 the NCAA rule was that SIUE could pick one male and one female sport other than basketball to be eligible for the D1 tournament on their first year in D1. It appears that rule was changed.
