Hernandez has been a huge bright spot on an off year. 28 points tonight in a massive upset is great And that’s an understatement….if you would have told me he would be one of the best players in the entire league prior to the year beginning? I would have asked you what you were smoking. He literally has been unstoppable in this league and hats off to him. Talk about perseverance! Here is a kid who was highly recruited out of high school, sat the bench his entire college career until this year. He could have packed it in and quit. Instead he has put himself in position to be first team all league. What a story!

I gotta say I didn't expect this result as evident by my prediction, and I'm proud to say I was wrong. Stan said the team was focused, ready to go, and early to the bus for once.

You can bet every dime you had the league office was happy with USI's win. They want us playing in the tournament.

When 20 game league leading Morehead can only realistically get maybe 1000 to go to their home games, how many will drive 5 hours to Evansville? Not many would be my guess. Even if it’s only 1200-1500 USI fans for a first round game, it will probably be the largest crowd of the entire tournament. Do expect a nice turnout for the USI women though. Only Murray State fans would travel in the old OVC also. Belmont fans didn’t bring 300 most years even as a top 2-3 conference team. No one else ever brought more than 300-500 unless it was the championship game on national tv. USI would help for sure being in it even if just for one game.

Crazy thing is that once we start getting better over the next couple of years, we could have 3-5k show up for the OVC Tournament. I remembered the 2019 F4 game was 90% USI fans in the Ford Center.

I am kind of thinking OVC will very soon award conference champions the opportunity to host the OVC tournament. I would support that idea. OVC is losing money renting out large facilities for a crowd of 2,000 or less.

I am kind of thinking OVC will very soon award conference champions the opportunity to host the OVC tournament. I would support that idea. OVC is losing money renting out large facilities for a crowd of 2,000 or less. Several smaller D1 conferences already do that, so I think you are correct. Beth mentioned last year they are already considering having first and second round games on campus sites and only the final 4 would go to the championship venue…like the Ford center. I still think it will relocate soon to a more centralized location that probably holds fewer people. Something that holds around 5k would probably be better suited for the OVC, plus having a more intimate venue where the seats are closer to the floor would help also. I’m not suggesting the SEA, but a facility like the SEA would be 10x better for the OVC championship because even with only 1500-2500 people, the atmosphere is still good because the lower bowl would be fairly full. The lowered bowl at the Ford holds about 6500, but because it’s so open and the seats area mile from the floor, it makes it feel really empty if there aren’t at least 4000 or more. I do agree that to save money going forward the conference might just let the regular season champs host the entire thing.

Doing so would hurt the chances of a 2 bid OVC because they are changing how conference games are weighted. It used to be that the conference tournament was weighted as a neutral court game regardless of the location. Now the conferences that have games on a teams home court, those count as a home game for the host team. So if we hosted a game and won it would be weighted as home win instead of a neutral site win, which could be the difference between a Quad 3 win and a Quad 4 win.

So if we hosted a game and won it would be weighted as home win instead of a neutral site win, which could be the difference between a Quad 3 win and a Quad 4 win. That is true, but I don’t see the OVC as a two bid league for a long time, if ever. The NCAA is already making it almost impossible for any mid to get 2 bids, and the OVC isn’t one of the higher mids. The only time I could see it coming into play is if we have a team go about 28-2 but get knocked off in conference championship game and depend on an at large bid. ISU is seeing their at large bid go down the drain after losing a few MVC games. They are about 23-5 and still won’t get at large bid in a high mid conference. Imo, the OVC needs to do what is best for all the members of the conference and ensure the conference brand and image improves. It’s a bad look to play your conference championship game on national tv at the Ford n front of 800 people because UALR and Morehead are both over 5 hours away so their fans can’t make it here. If it’s at UALR and they are playing in the conference championship for an NCAA automatic bid, their fans would show up…even if it’s only 3000 fans. But, 3000 fans in a 5600 seat arena still looks pretty impressive for the national tv audience that hasn’t watched an OVC game until then.
