Wow….such an expensive sport to just cancel. Maybe they should consider canceling it permanently. We already didn’t have many meets scheduled to start with so this isn’t good. I really have no idea how much we spend on swim and dive team but we can’t possibly profit from it. The only real benefit I see in having a team is to get 40-50 more students to come here each year. I believe since it’s not a core sport that they don’t have to offer full ride scholarships. I know some want to have as many sports as possible, but I have a different view on this. I would rather have about 15 sports…total for men and women…but be able to concentrate on making those 15 better by funding them properly. Since budgeting is extremely important in D1, my view is that we need to be more efficient with our money and maybe drop a few things that we are underperforming and underfunded. The best example currently is men’s and women’s tennis. Neither team is winning anything and we are not going to spend enough money to get someone in here to raise the program up to be highly competitive. I prefer quality over quantity and I think to achieve that on limited funds that we need to take a serious look at how we can accomplish this.

I really don't want to add anymore sports but I don't want to end any sports. I would like someday add beach volleyball as a sport. Beach volleyball is a OVC sport and the limited research I have done is that volleyball players on the team play beach volleyball and the assistant volleyball coach is the beach volleyball head coach.

Beach volleyball is a great and growing sport. The decision to add a swim team, I would love to know the brainiac behind that decision.

To be fair to swimmers at USI, I am pretty sure we added that before we knew we were going D1. I think had we known we were making the jump before swim team was formed that we would have scrapped that plan. Now that we have a beautiful new aquatic center we need to get something out of it. If we are only giving 25% or 50% scholarships for swimming then it’s not bad for USI because we get 40-50 students paying half or 3/4 tuition. The few swim meets we had last year were well attended with standing room only crowd, so maybe we can develop a decent program for not much money.

I agree when USI built the aquatic center USI had D2 in mind. Swimming is a GLVC sport and I am sure USI's plan was to add swimming as a GLVC sport.

Short term mindset rarely works….this was a bad addition. Very expensive and not a sport the OVC will ever have.
