I was able to talk with a current lady eagle basketball player at the softball game this past weekend and asked if she knew of any new recruits. She was not aware of any at that time but also said she believed USI already had 14 players on scholarship and if I’m not mistaken, women in D1 can have 15. So, maybe Rick is looking for. D1 transfer. She was extremely confident that not only could this current group compete in the OVC, but that she said they will be surprised if they don’t finish in the top half of the conference next season. I do agree that I believe the womens teams for the most part should be more competitive faster than on the mens side. I draw this conclusion based on the fact that many female athletes are looking for a college that has a major they want/need as opposed to most male athletes seem to want to play at the highest level. Therefore, USI has already attracted many great female athletes because it has a really strong health profession and education and accounting programs, which they like and will excel in after graduation. Imo, this will make the womens programs at USI get up to speed quickly in D1.

I looked at the stats for her from last year at Murray. She didn’t play many minutes so it’s hard to tell how impactful she will be for us. To be honest, I think the players we have back are probably already ahead of her but it will be good to get solid back ups. Who knows, maybe she has improved since last year and will compete for a starting role. If I’m not mistaken this might be the only recruit we get for this season since we didn’t lose much.

Shannon also was offered by UE. Glad to see RIck is going after players that are being recruited by other mid major conference programs. I think the USI women should be able to compete with most other mid-majors sooner than later. USI has a lot to offer for a lady wanting to play D1 basketball. USI supports the womens program already and they get to play in a state of the art facility. USI also has several really strong academic programs that are transitionally dominated by women - i.e. nursing and health professions, accounting, teacher education. USI school of nursing is one of the top rated in the state annually.
