Quick thoughts on intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday... Addy Blackwell looked full speed, and looked really good. I was worried about her health and coming back from injury, but she looked smooth and explosive on cuts to the basket. Madi Webb is going to be a huge asset down low. She looked really comfortable, and was automatic within 5 feet of the basket. Vanessa Shafford still shooting lights out. If you give her any sort of space, she will light you up. Chloe Gannon also looked really good down low. I can see her getting some major minutes this year. Great to hear about those 4. What about the other newcomers? Do you have a projected starting 5 in mind? I think just having better ball handling this year will help us get over the hump in close games we blew last year. With 3 really good inside players, we should be a tough team this year. The sheer number of turnovers cost a conservatively 4 games last year.

If I had to guess, my starting 5 would be
1 - Blackwell 2 - Handley 3 - Shafford 4 - Raley 5 - Webb
Saunders would be by 6th man.

Interesting that Saunders would not start since she was freshman of the year in MVC. But, sounds like she will play a lot as 6th man. Do you think the 3 freshman will see significant minutes?

As for Saunders, where do you play her? 2 or 3, so you bench Handley or Shafford? Can’t see that.
Four freshmen…
I think Gannon will get some minutes.
Loden/Dennis behind Shafford (and nothing wrong with that, she should have been on the Second Team OVC at worst last year…. Totally robbed). Shafford led team in minutes played last year - I think close to 30/game. So could be a case of hard to get them in. Good problem to have, though. Loden can also play the stretch 4, but you get into that forward position she’d be fighting for minutes against Carie and Gallegos.
Ralston, the point guard, is probably behind Green for backup PG.

I was thinking Saunders starts over Handley. Handley was about .23% fig shooter,24% 3 point shooter, averaged 4 ppg and to be honest was one of our weakest links. I have not seen Saunders play yet, but if she was Freshman of the year in the MVC……which is usually considered a tougher league….than my thoughts were she would be a star here one day. My other question is about Dennis. You didn’t mention her in regard tp playing time so I am curious if she is maybe redshirting this season? Appreciate the inside info on women’s basketball.

Yeah, I was thinking the exact same. Maybe Handley gets the nod because she is a senior? Or maybe Saunders gets her minutes backing up both the 1 and the 2?

I was thinking Handley over Saunders because she’s a senior captain.
Other x-factor here is Howard. She looked pretty good on Saturday also.
But like I said, good problems to have.
OVC Media day today on espn+. USI coaches on around 10am.

Woman picked a very respectable 6th with 2 selected preseason all conference. I think the women could finish as high as 4th.

The women appear loaded and have some strong returns along with strong new class.

I know they have Lindenwood picked last, but they got a new coach with a strong history so I see them moving up. I think USI could even finish a few spots higher also if we cut those turnovers down…..which I think we will be much improved from last year. Attachments:

I think she will get it turned around, but it’s going to take a few years.

Stein and Tori represented the University well during their interview. Well done to both!

Drury always has great women’s basketball so if she has 4-5 of them, they will probably be better sooner than later. Might not be this year, but I expect them to be a thorn in our side going forward.
